Job Summary

The assistant director assists the CSG Chief Communications Officer (CCO) with the management of the CSG voice, brand, look and feel in relation to all CSG products and services. Serve as the managing editor for Capitol Ideas magazine, member newsletters, the CSG website and all social media. Provide creative and innovative ways to deliver vital information to elected and appointed state government officials. Manage team members and resources effectively to create real value for CSG member jurisdictions. Works closely with the CCO to manage the day to day operations for the department. Works closely with members of CSG's senior leadership team to help advance CSG's mission and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Directly supervises a diverse team of communications professionals capable of positioning CSG as the "go to" resource for state officials on specific public policy issues. Serves as a mentor and manager, providing leadership, support, collaboration and guidance to create and foster a professionally satisfying work culture.
  • Serve as a leader and advisor on all CSG messaging, writing, editing, graphic design, social media, press relations, video and web design.
  • Provide guidance and leadership in developing both content and communication strategies for all CSG programs and initiatives including the CSG Center for Innovation and CSG National Center of Interstate Compacts.
  • Identify new technology and processes for delivering information to state leaders.
  • Prepare excellent written materials including articles, reports, talking points, remarks for leadership, press releases and op-eds.
  • Communicate and collaborate with senior leadership team members on the status of projects and solicit their advice and participation in helping leverage the work of the CSG for maximum impact.
  • Provide excellent project management for all CSG products, services and initiatives to include serving as the liaison for other departments.
  • Collaborates and fosters positive relationships and opportunities with CSG regional offices.
  • Assist with the financial management of the communications departments.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to convey information to many audiences in a variety of formats including written reports, fact sheets, speeches, presentations, websites, social media, videos and other digital platforms.
  • Ability to manage simultaneously multiple projects with varying deadlines while providing excellent program management and quality service.
  • Work in a team environment and communicate in a professional manner.
  • Ability to conceptualize and convey data in ways which enhance its utility to end users.
  • Ability to develop, administer and oversee multiple projects.
  • Knowledge of accounting and budgeting systems and the processing of expenses.
  • Knowledge in state government and the political process.
  • Possess excellent critical thinking, problem solving and communications skills.
  • Possess an excellent attention to detail.
  • Skill and competence to work effectively with a myriad of state officials, including high-level executive, legislative and judicial officials.
  • Ability to work with leading experts in the field of state policy, including researchers, policy experts, program providers and private sector representatives.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle politically sensitive work.
  • Experience administering established human resources, accounting and travel policies.
  • Skill and competence to work collaboratively with multiple internal and external partners.
  • Self-motivated, able to take initiative and see complex tasks through to completion.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
  • Exercise the highest ethical standards in all aspects of the work.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree required with a major in communications, public relations, journalism or related field strongly preferred.
  • Minimum five years' experience in the field of communications with preference given to experience with both publishing and politics.
  • Minimum two years' experience directly supervising and managing staff.
